Ingots and Castings Metalwerks Alloy Melting Pittsburgh PA

Metalwerks’ five vacuum melt furnaces provide a large range of ingot casting sizes and geometries based upon customer needs.

Vacuum Induction Melting

The research Vacuum Induction Melt (VIM) furnace can cast weights of up to 20 pounds of iron, nickel, or cobalt based alloys.  Our typical mold sizes are 1”, 1.5”, 2” and 3” diameter by approximately 10” in length, as well as a 1.5” thick by 5.5” wide by 11” tall slab mold.   The production VIM can cast weights of up to 650 pounds of nickel-based alloys. The typical mold sizes for this furnace are 4” diameter by 40” length, 6” diameter x 65” length or 5” thick by 10” wide by 30” tall slab molds.   Additionally, we can purchase molds of any diameter or geometry and we can also design custom investment casting molds that allow us to cast any exact shape you may require. We regularly supply alloys of Iron, Nickel, or Cobalt from these furnaces but we also have the capabilities to use graphite crucibles to melt Nitinol or other exotic alloys.

Induction Skull Melting

Our Induction Skull Melting (ISM) furnace can cast heats of 75 pounds up to 150 pounds.  Our typical mold sizes are 4” diameter by 40” Length, 6” diameter by 30” length and 8” diameter by 20” length.  However, we have cast as small as 2” diameter and have cast slabs of 2” thick by 15” wide by 20” by long.   We can always purchase molds to specific diameter or length requirements. Additionally, we can design custom investment casting molds that allow us to cast any exact shape you may need.

Vacuum Arc Remelting

Our research Vacuum Arc Remelt (VAR) furnaces can cast ingots of 2.5” diameter by 10” length or 4.375” diameter by 10” Length.  The production VAR has a wide variety of crucible sizes which allows us to cast ingots from 6.5” diameter by 28” length to 20” diameter by 80” length.   The advantage of this furnace is that we can cast smaller ingots in either our VIM or ISM furnaces and then weld them together to remelt in our VAR. This allows us to be able to cast an ingot that meets your specific order requirements without being forced into the large mill minimum heat size requirements.   The table below lists the available crucible sizes.
